Solar Energy Solutions   (front page story continued)

Installation of a solar system is a complicated project that requires constant attention. ERG helps you manage the project, ERG is your consultant, advising you at each phase of the project. The following is a condensed version of what ERG performs as the project management team.

  • Calculate the size of the system and potential investment.
  • Interface and initiate the reservation request with the utility company.
  • Select and interface with the civil, structural and electrical engineers.
  • Secure the necessary permitting required.
  • Issue Request for Proposals (RFP's) for the various installation stages.
    • Civil or structural work
    • Laborers (installation of mounting system and panels)
    • Electrical contractors (electrical connectivity)
    • Post install monitoring
  • Search out and procure cost effective materials.
    • Panels typically can cost approximately $3.00-$3.50 a watt.
    • Mounting systems can cost approximately $.50-$.75 a watt.
    • Inverters can cost approximately $.50 a watt.
    • Wiring, conduit, connectors, and grid interconnects will cost approximately $.25 a watt
    • Engineering, installation labor, equipment and utility interconnects can easily add another $1.50-$3.00 per watt depending on the complexity of the system, where it is mounted, and how the system is interfaced to the grid.
  • Minimum of weekly reporting to the owner to insure project is on target.
  • Assist with commissioning of the system.
  • Follow-up with the utility and various inspection agencies to insure rebates are awarded and permits are fulfilled.
  • Assistance with selection of post installation monitoring program.
From the above costs you can see where the system could range between $6.00 and $8.00 per watt. ERG's goal is to reduce the above costs by $1.00 to $2.00 a watt by purchasing the materials direct and splitting the labor between mechanical labor and electrician labor.
